Rainfall, Soil and Air Temperature Monitoring

When is the right time to plant certain crops in spring? Is it important not to plant into cold soils and why? Don’t guess. Monitor your soil temperature with Evvos’ OneSense Agriculture UC7 data transmitter and accurate temperature sensors.
Making the decision to plant into cold soils can increase the risk of slow emergence and uneven stands, since some crops’ seeds germinate more slowly in cooler soils. Plant seedling injury due to chilling water absorption may occur when soil temperatures fall below 10 °C (50 °F) degrees. For this reason, it is important to look at the next 24-36 hours to determine the risk of soil temperatures dropping below that threshold. Certain seeds absorb water more quickly than others and as a result the risk of injury is greatest close to planting. Because of this, the 24 hours following planting are critical.

Don’t Make Unnecessary Preparations and Trips to the Field

Soil temperatures are an important variable that you should consider when making the decision to head to the field. With all the pressure to get started planting, it is important to take the time to ensure you are setting your crop up for success.
